What Is Yu-Gi-Oh?

How To Play
- Start with a legal Main Deck and Extra Deck, then draw an opening hand.
- Summon monsters, activate spells and traps, and use effects to build your board.
- Declare attacks during the Battle Phase to damage your opponent or destroy monsters.
- Use chains to respond to effects. Understanding timing is a major part of improvement.
- Win by reducing the opponent's Life Points to zero or using a card effect that wins the Duel.
Game Modes & Formats

Advanced Constructed
Advanced is the main Yu-Gi-Oh! tournament format, built around the current Forbidden and Limited List and the fast, combo-driven style the game is known for.
- Main Decks are 40 to 60 cards, with an optional Extra Deck and Side Deck for tournament play.
- Players need to understand chains, activation timing, summoning methods, and how interruptions shape a turn.
- Competitive players should always check the current Forbidden and Limited List before an event.
Traditional
Traditional is a casual throwback format that allows limited access to cards forbidden in Advanced, creating a wild environment for experienced duelists.
- Not commonly used for standard local tournament play, but useful for special casual nights.
- Games can be explosive because historically powerful cards are available in limited quantities.
- Best approached as a fun side format rather than the default expectation for events.
Speed Duel
Speed Duel condenses the game into a faster table experience with smaller decks, fewer zones, and Skill Cards that give each duelist a distinct identity.
- Great for quick demos and players who want a more compact version of Yu-Gi-Oh!.
- Deck construction and legal card pools differ from Advanced Constructed.
- The smaller board helps newer players understand battle, spells, traps, and monster effects without as much overhead.
Structure Deck & Sealed Nights
Product-based casual events are a strong way to learn Yu-Gi-Oh! without needing a fully tuned competitive deck on day one.
- Structure Deck battles keep the power level even and teach a theme's core game plan.
- Sealed or limited-product nights focus on improvising with what you open.
- These events are ideal for learning card text, chain timing, and side-deck thinking in a relaxed environment.

Structure Decks give you a focused plan. Playing three copies of the same Structure Deck is a common way to build a stronger beginner deck.
