What Is The Pokemon TCG?

The Pokemon Trading Card Game is a strategic, collectible battle game where players use Pokemon, Energy, Trainer cards, and evolution lines to Knock Out opposing Pokemon and claim Prize cards.

Core Idea

Take Prize Cards

Most games are won by taking all six Prize cards. You take Prizes by Knocking Out your opponent's Pokemon.

Board Setup

Active And Bench

Each player has one Active Pokemon and can build a Bench of backup Pokemon that may evolve, retreat, or become the next attacker.

Energy

Power Your Attacks

Pokemon usually need Energy attached to use attacks. Managing Energy attachments is one of the main decisions each turn.

How To Play

  1. Start with a 60-card deck, set aside six Prize cards, and choose a Basic Pokemon as your Active Pokemon.
  2. Draw a card at the start of your turn, then play Pokemon, Trainer cards, and Energy according to the rules.
  3. Attach one Energy per turn unless a card effect says otherwise.
  4. Evolve Pokemon when eligible, retreat when needed, and use attacks to damage or Knock Out opposing Pokemon.
  5. Take Prize cards when you Knock Out Pokemon. Win by taking all of your Prize cards, or if your opponent has no Pokemon in play.

Game Modes & Formats

Most games can be played a few different ways. These are the formats and table styles players are most likely to see at casual nights, prereleases, leagues, and organized events.

Format

Standard

Standard is the main Play! Pokemon constructed format and the easiest place to start for local events, current cards, and clear deck-building expectations.

  • Decks are 60 cards and use the current legal regulation marks and set list.
  • Games revolve around taking Prize cards by Knocking Out opposing Pokemon while managing Energy, Trainers, and evolution lines.
  • The format rewards sequencing: searching, drawing, attaching Energy, and choosing when to commit resources.
Format

Expanded

Expanded opens the card pool beyond Standard, creating a bigger sandbox with more combos, older staples, and unusual deck engines.

  • A larger legal pool means stronger interactions and more matchup knowledge.
  • Local events may vary, so players should confirm legality and current restrictions before building around older cards.
  • Best for players who like long-term collections and deeper deck customization.
Event Type

Build & Battle / Prerelease

Prerelease-style Pokemon events are friendly sealed-product experiences where players build smaller decks from a kit and learn a set together.

  • Players typically use a Build & Battle kit plus provided packs to create a streamlined deck.
  • Games are shorter and more forgiving than full Standard matches.
  • A great option for newer players because everyone is exploring unfamiliar cards together.
Play Style

League & Learn-to-Play

Casual league play is where Pokemon shines for families, new players, collectors, and competitive players testing lists in a low-pressure setting.

  • Battle decks and ex decks are excellent teaching tools.
  • Staff or regulars can help explain Prize cards, Weakness, Resistance, retreating, and evolution timing.
  • Bring a deck, a binder, or just curiosity; the table can meet you where you are.
Best First Step

Battle Academy Or League Battle Decks

Battle Academy is built to teach. League Battle Decks are stronger next-step products once the basic flow makes sense.
